  What We Do

We offer contests, practice material, and tests for Texas UIL academic events.

Our Contest (The Shootout)
Off-season practice is a must for serious UIL programs and we think our contest can be a motivating tool for this practice. Our contest offers students the unique opportunity to compete against other students from across the state without the expense and travel required for normal Saturday UIL events.

In the Shootout, UIL style tests are given during designated periods at each school. Those tests are graded on-site and scores are entered immediately into our online results system. Since results are viewed online and entered as tests are taken, students can quickly see how they are doing relative to the rest of the field. Awards are given to the best students and teams of students in time for end of year awards ceremonies.

The Shootout is made up of the following events:

  • Biology
  • Calculator
  • Chemistry
  • Current Events
  • Literary Criticism
  • Mathematics
  • Number Sense
  • Social Studies
  • Spelling

The entry fee ($35) for an event in one of our contests includes this year's tests for that event and allows for the participation of a reasonable number of students from your school.

Our Practice Materials
We offer the following workbooks and tutorials:

  • Shoot n' Spell ($45)

Shoot n' Spell is a computer program that can be downloaded to your computer and sent home on cd's for your students use on their computers. Shoot n' Spells for each grade levels contain all the current words for those grade levels. Students create user names which tracks their progress through several program choices. These include seeing a word misspelled and typing it in correctly. If not done correctly, the correct spelling is shown and students must then copy it correctly. Length of test can be set and the database can be all the words or the missed words for that student. Another program choice is seeing several words and deciding which are correct and which are not. Individual price is $45 (available for 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, and high school).

  • The HS Number Sense Workbook ($65)

The High School Number Sense Workbook contains about 110 pages of problems on the high school number sense test. It is patterned after the Shootout Number Sense Workbook (see below). It contains a brief review of about 24 shortcuts. It also explains shortcuts or methods for adding, subtracting, and multiplying bases, converting from base 10 to other bases, other bases to base 10, converting base 9 to base 3, base 4 to base 2, base 8 to base 2, sum and product of roots, multiplying by numbers close to 1000, multiplying by 375, by 125, by 111, by 3367, multiplying numbers like 34 x 38, repeating decimals, squaring numbers like 505, problems on the number of positive integral divisors, multiplying numbers like 32 x 72, finding area of a rhombus using diagonals, etc, and has practice and review on all these types of problems. Also, it contains memory work practice and drill on squares, square roots, trig values, and measurement.

  • The Shootout Calculator Crunchers Workbook ($75)

This workbook is for Jr High/Elementary Calculator. The workbook has 245 pages of Calculator number cruncher problems. There are 7 sets of the first two pages of number crunchers, 7 sets of the first three pages of number crunchers, 7 sets of the first four pages of number crunchers, etc. It's a great teaching tool that saves ALL your present tests.

Hand the newcomer the first two pages of number crunchers instead of an entire test. When your student has had enough practice on two pages of crunchers, start handing him three pages of crunchers. You still haven't touched a single one of your complete tests. Another use of the workbook is to time how far the student can go in number crunchers. Again, you're not using a single one of your complete tests already in your files.

  • The Shootout Math Workbook ($65)

This workbook covers all sorts of problem types on the High School Mathematics test. The workbook contains explanations of how to work the problems, illustrations when needed, and exercises to give students practice using what they've learned. The workbook is about 100 pages in length, reproducible for your campus.

  • The Shootout Number Sense Workbook ($65)

This workbook contains 107 pages of problems for number sense students. The problems are extremely useful for beginning High School students who are working in the first 50 problems of the High School tests. It can also be used with Jr High students.
